Die Region Şengal hat eine lange Historie der Unterdrückung und wurde 2014-2015 Schauplatz des aktuellsten Völkermords der Geschichte. Als der IS im August die Stadt einnahm, flohen die Peschmerga und die Irakische Armee und hinterließen die Bevölkerung schutzlos. Der IS verübte in der folgenden Zeit einen Völkermord an den dort lebenden Ezid*innen. Hundert-tausende Menschen flohen, etwa 10 000 Frauen und Kinder wurden verschleppt und versklavt und nur durch eine spektakuläre Rettungsaktion der Guerillaeinheiten der PKK konnte einigen tausend Ezid*innen zur Flucht verholfen werden. Die Stadt wurde im November 2015 vom IS befreit, doch von über 2300 Frauen und Kindern fehlt bis heute jede Spur. Seit dem wurden zur Sicherstellung der Freiheit und Sicherheit der Region eigene Selbstverteidigungseinheiten und Selbstverwaltungsstrukturen gebildet, inklusive reiner Fraueneinheiten & -strukturen. Diese hart erkämpften Erfolge werden nun durch die Angriffe der Irakischen Armee bedroht und wieder sind tausende Familien der Region auf der Flucht und die Öffentlichkeit schweigt.
The Şengal region has a long history of oppression and in 2014-2015 it became the site of the most recent genocide in history. When ISIS captured the town in August, the Peshmerga and Iraqi Army fled, leaving the population defenseless. In the following period, ISIS committed genocide against the Yezidis living there. Hundreds of thousands of people fled, about 10,000 women and children were abducted and enslaved, and only a spectacular rescue operation by the PKK guerrilla units helped a few thousand Yezidis to escape. The city was liberated from ISIS in November 2015, but over 2300 women and children are still missing. Since then, self-defense units and self-governance structures have been formed to ensure the freedom and security of the region, including women-only units & structures. These hard-won successes are now threatened by the attacks of the Iraqi Army and again thousands of families of the region are on the run and the public is silent.
Im laufe des Angriffs wurden zudem zwei internationale Journalist*innen, Marlene F. aus Deutschland und Matej K. Aus Slowenien, in der Region festgenommen, nach Bagdad entführt und seid dem im Hauptquartier des Irakischem Geheimdienstes festgehalten. Diese Aktion wurde mit dem politischen Kalkül durchgeführt, die internationale Berichterstattung auf ein Minimum zu reduzieren und zu verschleiern was die Irakische Armee tut: Nämlich das zu Ende bringen woran der IS 2014 scheiterte.
In the course of the attack, two international journalists, Marlene F. from Germany and Matej K. from Slovenia, were arrested in the region, abducted to Baghdad and held in the headquarters of the Iraqi intelligence service. This action was carried out with the political calculation to reduce the international reporting to a minimum and to cover up what the Iraqi army is doing: namely to finish what ISIS failed to do in 2014.
