In der Nacht vom 18. auf den 19. Mai 2022 starb Bilal Jaffal in einer Asylunterkunft in Chemnitz, Deutschland. Der Tod des libanesischen Geflüchteten wirft Fragen auf. Warum wollte die Chemnitzer Polizei zunächst keine Ermittlungen aufnehmen und gab einen natürlichen Tod als Todesursache an? Erst auf Druck von Anwälten und der Öffentlichkeit wurde mit den Ermittlungen begonnen. Es wurden Vorwürfe laut, dass die Polizei nicht ermittelte, weil Bilal "nur" ein Flüchtling war. Laut Zeugenaussagen wies Bilal frische Kopfverletzungen auf, die letztlich darauf schließen lassen, dass er nicht eines natürlichen Todes gestorben ist. Eine Autopsie des Leichnams wurde ebenfalls empfohlen, aber erst nach Druck auf die Behörden durchgeführt. Am 3. Juni riefen Bilals Verwandte und Freunde sowie linke Gruppen zu einer Gedenk- und Protestkundgebung auf. Gemeinsam mit dem DunyaCollecitve waren wir vor Ort und nutzten die Gelegenheit, mit Bilals Familie, Freunden und Zeugen zu sprechen.

On the night of May 18-19, 2022, Bilal Jaffal died in an asylum shelter in Chemnitz, Germany. The death of the Lebanese refugee raises questions. Why did the Chemnitz police initially not want to investigate and gave a natural death as the cause of death? They started with an investigation only after pressure from lawyers and public reaction. Accusations were made that the police did not investigate because Bilal was "only" a refugee. According to witnesses, Bilal had fresh head injuries that would ultimately suggest that he did not die of natural causes. An autopsy of the body was also recommended, but was only carried out after pressure was put on the authorities. On June 3, Bilal's relatives and friends, as well as left-wing groups, called for a memorial and protest rally. Together with the DunyaCollecitve we were there and took the chance to talk to Bilal's family, friends and witnesses.
