Modern German Slang

We continue to introduce you to dialectal, slang, and purely German words and expressions for everyday conversation.

Safe
Translates as "safe," but it can also be used to affirm what you're saying: "one hundred percent," "definitely," "safe."

For instance:
Das ist safe gut! (That is definitely good!)

Fett
This word also has a specific direct meaning. In the regular dictionary, you'll find "fett" as "fat," but it also means "cool," "awesome." In everyday speech, "geil" is often used with the same meaning. And for a more formal alternative – there's "toll." For example, when you're around grandma, it's better to use "toll".

For instance:
Dieses Auto ist fett! (This car is awesome!)

Kröten
This comes from the word "Kröte" – "toad," and it signifies "money." Sometimes, they also call it "Mäuse" - "mice" or "Asche" - "ash". By the way, the neutral term for money is "Geld".

For instance:
Ich habe keine Kröten mehr. (I don't have any money left.)

Verfassung
This is one of the funniest words with a separate colloquial meaning. "Verfassung" is a constitution, but it can also be used to describe your condition or state. Ich bin heute nicht in der Verfassung. – I'm not up to it today.

For instance:
Ich bin heute nicht in der Verfassung, zu feiern. (I'm not in the mood to celebrate today.)
