The use of German prepositions in the question "Wann?" (When?).

The preposition um is used when you say the time:

Wann treffen wir uns? - Um 19 Uhr.
When do we meet? - At 7 p.m.

The preposition am (an+dem) is used when referring to the time of day, the days of the week, or the date:

Wann geht ihr ins Kino? - Am Nachmittag. / Am Freitag. / Am 4. (vierten) April.
When do you go to the cinema? - In the afternoon. / On Friday. / On April 4.

The preposition im (in+dem) means time of year, name of months, indication of the year.

Wann ist es passiert? - Im Herbst. / Im September. / Im Jahr(e) 2005.
When did it happen? - In autumn. / In September. / In 2005.

However! There are some exceptions:
in der Nacht (die Nacht)
in der Früh (die Früh)
in der Woche (die Woche)
am Wochenende (das Wochenende)
