It should be noted that particles can be similar in appearance to:

- adjectives/ adverbs - bloß, eben, gerade, mal, nun, so, schon;
- pronouns - allein, es, etwa, selbst;
- conjunctions - denn, doch.

We should not forget the syntactic function of particles and other parts of speech:

The particle doch:

Wo habe ich doch diese Frau gesehen? - Where have I seen this woman?

Union doch:

Zuweilen bekommen wir Nachrichten von ihm, doch nicht oft - Sometimes we get news from him, but not often.
